What is Fossil Free?

"If it is wrong to wreck the climate, then it is wrong to profit from that wreckage” - Bill McKibben, 350.org

Fossil Free is a global network of campaigns
working toward fossil fuel divestment in our communities.

What is Divestment?

Divestment is the opposite of investment – it simply means getting rid of stocks, bonds, or investments in a company because you don't believe in what they are doing.
Fossil fuel divestment aims to de-legitimise the fossil fuel industry for its culpability in the climate crisis. We hope that the fossil fuel divestment movement can help break the hold that the fossil fuel industry has on our economy and our governments.

Who are FOSSIL FREE BRISTOL?

We are a group of ordinary citizens, calling on institutions in and around Bristol to divest their money from Fossil Fuels. If you would like to get involved email us or find us on facebook or follow us on twitter

What are FOSSIL FREE BRISTOL doing?

We are currently campaigning for the Avon Pension Fund to move its endowment away from fossil fuels. Sign our petition: https://campaigns.gofossilfree.org/p/APF

We are also encouraging individuals to move their money from bank accounts and pension funds which are supporting the fossil fuel industry.

Students are campaigning for Bristol University to divest. You can see their campaign here: http://bit.ly/1AkrpQC

We are also supporting the Guardian’s Keep It in the Ground campaign asking the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Wellcome Trust to divest. http://bit.ly/1GLB7f4

Does Divestment actually work?

Yes! It played a major part in putting an end to the era of South African Apartheid. In the 1980’s, 155 universities, 26 state governments, 22 counties, and 90 cities all took their money from multinationals that did business in the country. This campaign helped break the back of the Apartheid government and usher in an era of democracy and equality.
